Classic TV Shows Thrive in Syndication, On Free TV Websites and Through Subscription Services
Although there are still some here and there, it appears that the death knell has sounded for TV show opening themes which introduced the players, offered a nice bit of music,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sometimes even summarized the series plot. Who could forget the saucy Latin rhythms of Ricky Ricardo which musically communicated to audiences the love he had for Lucy, his zany red-haired wife? Then there is the ballad of the lovely lady and her girls of the golden hair who meshed with the four men living all together plus housekeeper, forever connecting The Brady Bunch with Boomers who were kids in the 1970s. More recently -- even though it debuted 25 years ago -- audiences looked forward each September to see what kind of dancing the stars of The Cosby Show would do to open the show.
Take for example the sitcoms which form part of ABC-TV’s Wednesday night programming. After a handful of episodes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hank, Kelsey Grammar’s most recent comic vehicle and an early network cancellation, has been replaced at 8 p.m. by reruns of the more popular Modern Family. This show about a post-millennium extended family typically begins with a documentary style introduction by one or more of the characters followed by the show’s first scene and an opening which offers just enough of a musical theme to background the title and a 10-second shot of the cast holding a freeze frame portrait of the characters featured in the previous shot. As it continues into its next scene, the names of its actors appear at the bottom left of the screen. At the end of the episode, a voice over announces The Middle which begins with an even shorter musical theme and flash of the title. After nine seasons as Ray Romano’s TV wife and a four-year absence from prime time, Patricia Heaton narrates this series in which she appears as the mom in a suburban Indiana family. Like Modern Family and others, credits for The Middle also appear at the bottom of the screen during its opening scene.
From a time long ago when it became certain that the medium of television had staying power until today when it is so accessible you can watch it from your mobile phone, hundreds of television programs have come and retired to become part of the good old days. Thanks to syndication, cable networks such as Nick at Nite and TV Land and about a gazillion other channel choices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shows like The Honeymooners, Little House on the Prairie, Sanford & Son and more recent classics like Frasier and Friends have a potentially never-ending fan base. For audiences who opt out of allowing unseen programmers control of their viewing choices, a multitude of options exist enabling viewers to find classic series including a number of free TV websites and the subscription service Netflix which along with feature films, also boasts a growing number of old and current television shows.
TV Show Theme Songs Gone but Never Forgotten
Broadcast television is free for viewers courtesy of the advertisers who pay the big bucks to hawk their wares. Half-hour shows deliver approximately 23 minutes of content,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even though it seems as if there are more commercials than ever before. Perhaps due to some clever repositioning of the breaks, many programs now open and end with a minimum of fanfare allowing for a more fluid text as blocks of 15- and 30-second commercials are often bunched in the middle and serve an increasing number of advertisers. While there are still actual musical arrangements associated with recent television series, significantly shorter samples of them can be heard during the broadcasts.
