s study was undertaken to develop a clearer picture of recent trends in YA book publishing. The focus was on describing current YA literature considered to be high quality (award winners) and popular with adolescents. The study was descriptive in nature and focused on the following four guiding questions:
1. What genres are represented and predominate in the current body of YA literature
2. Who is or is not represented in the current body of YA literature
3. What is the content of current YA books
4. What identifiable trends are manifest in the relation, stylistic, and structural features of new YA books
The first step in responding these questions entailed compiling a database of YA books?either fiction and nonfiction?promulgated in English between 1999 and 2005. The database consisted of (a) books educators thought to be lofty quality (gift champions), (b) books young adults chose for preferences, and (c) renowned books (best peddlers).
