When Sam gets rescued from the Taliban fighters, he struggles with significant inner turmoil. He feels tremendous guilt about surviving when his fellow soldiers didn’t; he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, and he picks up on the romantic vibes between his wife and his brother. Before long, the heroic brother and the wayward brother have shifted roles.
Appealing Actors in Brothers Compensate For Unappealing Story
The movie begins with scenes depicting the happy marriage of Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and his wife, Grace (Natalie Portman). They snuggle with their cute little girls, share secrets, and make love. This idyllic relationship must change as Sam gets sent to Afghanistan. When his Black Hawk helicopter gets shot down and he becomes a prisoner of war, it’s apparent that the suffering he’s endured will change him even further.
Sam’s conflict isn’t pretty to watch. Covered with scars and emaciated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he contorts his face with anger and screams obscenities with spittle flying from his mouth. This broken-down man bears little resemblance to the heroic image from the beginning of the movie.
Although Grace’s transformation can be painful to watch at times, she remains an admirable character throughout her struggles. (Portman is so lovely she even looks good crying.) Seeing Sam and Tommy make mistakes and try to fix those mistakes, however, becomes a challenge for the audience as we endure their abusive behaviors toward others. Their judgmental father, Hank (Sam Shepard),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], could also benefit from a few sessions on a therapist’s couch.
Meanwhile back at home, Grace has been told that all Marines onboard the helicopter, including her husband, died in a horrific crash. She takes comfort from her brother-in-law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sam’s younger sibling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who tries to redeem his criminal past by helping Grace and the kids get through the tragedy. He renovates her kitchen, spends time watching the girls, takes the family ice-skating, and kisses Grace during a moment of weakness.

The appeal of actors Maguire and Gyllenhaal will help viewers sympathize with their characters. Obviously it’s easy to love Sam when he’s a hero and Tommy when he’s charming, but these two actors manage to make us root for their characters even when their emotional damage threatens to destroy themselves and those around them. In a story filled with hatred, fear, sadness, and ignorance, the three stars search for the beauty deep within each character.
