ital warts are known as Condylomata Acuminata apart from anal and venereal warts. It is an infectious disease transmitted sexually caused by some strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). If a healthy partner has genital, oral or anal sex with an afflicted person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the disease is transmitted. The most apparent symptoms of HPV infection is genital warts. Though this is possible that the infected person does not grow the warts. Hence, an HPV infection may or may not result in warts but having warts means an HPV infection for sure.
Men and women are equally susceptible to genital warts. In men, however, the visibility of the warts is lower. In women, commonly affected regions of the anatomy include the outside or inside of the vagina, on the cervix of the uterus or around the anus. In men these areas are shaft of the penis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on the scrotum or around the anus. If the person has oral sex with an afflicted individual, the warts may form on mouth and throat also.
The formation of genital warts is not an immediate occurrence after HPV infection. There is usually a period of dormancy, after which the warts erupt. In this latent period, the individual is highly infective and hence a danger for his sexual partners.
Many strains of HPV exist. Of these, strains 6 and 11 cause 90% of the warts. Strains 16 and 18 are not the causative agents of warts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they do cause genital cancers. A preventive vaccine named Gardasil guards against the infections from all these HPV strains namely 6, 11, 16 and 18. The vaccine is not of any use to an already infected person - it acts by preventing future infections.
There are some other warts which are often confused with genital wart or Condylomata acuminata. These are Molluscum Contagiosum, Fordyce's spots and Hirsuties papillaries genitalis. So if you find warts growing your genital area, you should not hesitate to see a doctor. Only an authorized physician can tell you whether you really have genital warts or if the warts you have are harmless.
There are many ways to remove genital warts. The method of treatment will depend on factors like size, location etc. they can be:-
1. Imiquimod is a immune response cream applied to the local area
2. A 20% podophyllin anti-mitotic solution to be applied locally and then to be washed off
3. A 0.5% podofilox solution to be applied, but not to be washed off
4. Trichloroacetic acid
5. Pulsed dye laser
6. Liquid Nitrogen cryosurgery
7. Electric or laser cauterization
8. Condylox
9. Polyphenon E ointment made from green tea leaves extraction. It is however very expensive.
10. Surgery
Genital wart removal does not of course mean that HPV has been cured. Traditional theory assumes that HPV cannot be cured. However new studies involving DNA techniques have shown that the virus can either be removed or suppressed to such levels that it cannot be harmful through immunological response. However, if the HPV is not controlled genital warts once removed will come out once again. So while trying to remove genital warts, one should go for complete cure of HPV. Needless to say that earlier is the diagnosis, better is the chance of recovery. Studies have shown that 70% of the new HPV takes less than a year to clear and 91% may take up to two years. The healing process varies from person to person. Depending upon the quantity and size of the warts and the immune system of the patient, warts can be removed within two to six months. But removal of HPV will naturally take longer.
A well-used method of removing genital warts is genital wart cream. This is so because cream application is easy and painless, unlike surgery. Most of these creams are natural - they contain anti-viral oils from plants and contain no scalding acid ingredient. They sooth the afflicted area and are harsh only on the warts. If the warts are not treated till their roots, they can resurface. One must get rid of one's embarrassment and see a doctor. Only a doctor can make a scientific diagnosis of
