For some [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the show’s predisposition towards Jacob is convincing enough, but for others, the realization that Jacob has carelessly caused the suffering of both the survivors and his brother makes it difficult to take his words at face value. This is especially true when we consider that Jacob’s own knowledge of “the Light” is limited and that he is merely repeating what his mother taught him.
In “Across the Sea” fans of LOST got a glimpse of Jacob’s childhood and were introduced to yet another new storyline, “the Light.” On the other hand, viewers also witnessed the creation of the Smoke Monster – an event that Jacob is responsible for. As a child, the Man in Black discovers that his biological mother was murdered by his adoptive mother, who refuses to let him leave the island. She destroys his experiments, attacks him, and basically extinguishes every glimmer of hope he has of getting away. Simply put, the Man in Black is treated much like the plane crash survivors.
Conflicts of good and evil are never black and white, but on LOST every conflict is multi-colored. In the episodes leading up to the finale, the show emphasizes the “game” being played between the brothers and the injurious consequences of unleashing the Smoke Monster into the world at large. Unfortunately, we never find out what those consequences really are. Desmond’s Hume’s sojourn into the source of “the Light” causes the Man in Black to be human once again, giving Kate and Jack the opportunity to finish him off.

A Sneak Peak at Lost's Final Season
Contrary to what the show puts forth, the Man in Black doesn’t appear to be playing a game. In fact, he acts with purpose, while Jacob uses roundabout methods to manipulate the characters and convert them into blind believers. From childhood onward, the Man in Black’s primary goal is to get off the secluded island where he is virtually a captive, and there is no indication that he intends to destroy the wo
In the final season [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the remaining LOST characters found themselves caught in the middle of a battle between two brothers, a conflict that was still left unaddressed by the closing moments of the last episode. A major theme throughout the sixth season was the formulaic struggle between good and evil, a theme supposedly personified through the characters of Jacob (the island’s mysterious protector) and the Man in Black (Jacob’s twin brother and the Smoke Monster). However, after the events that played out in episode 15 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Across the Sea,” viewers have to wonder if the Man in Black is justified in his plot to destroy the survivors of Oceanic flight 815.
Jacob and the Man in Black
So, what’s the problem with this resolution? From the first moment that the Man in Black is introduced, the show informs the audience on how they should react to him without giving any solid evidence of villainy. The Man in Black is a villain because he wants to kill the people on the island; but, then again, hasn't Jacob already brought about the deaths of many in his quest to find a replacement? Beyond the show’s central figures, the other survivors of the plane crash seem to be meaningless pawns sacrificed for a cause that isn’t entirely clear. The Dharma Initiative was cruelly wiped out by Jacob’s followers. The death toll seems much higher on Jacob’s side, but he is still granted the narrative honor of being “the good guy.”
