Daybreakers has opened to mixed reviews. The film currently has a 64% rating on RottenTomatoes.com . Most viewers felt it has enough dark thrills to keep them entertained, The movie is more likely to satisfy fans who like storylines about vampires as evil predators rather than as romantic figures. But the knowledge that humans will be extinct in less than a month has thrown everything into a frenzy. Vampire are feeding off each other and turning into evil-bat-like creatures called "subsiders". The military patrols the streets looking for renegade humans.
Daybreakers: The Storyline
In the year 2019, a plague has turned ninety per cent of the world into vampires. To make matters worse, there is a shortage of blood. The few remaining humans have been rounded up like livestock and imprisoned in a place where their blood is being systematically drained and marketed.
The cast includes Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke as Edward Dalton and Sam Neill as Charles Bromley, who play vampire characters. On the human side, Willem Dafoe plays Lionel "Elvis" Cormac, and Claudia Karvan plays Audrey Bennett.
A remaining group of humans who have gone underground are also working on the problem and they make a discovery that might save the human race from extinction. Edward makes a painful transition to become human again to help the cause and redeem himself.
The new vampire film Daybreakers is more like a cross between Blade and 30 Days of Night than the traditional Dracula tale. Or perhaps a futuristic version of True Blood.. Like the television series True Blood, the vampires in Daybreakers get their blood from a bottle. And they are running in short supply.
The Lionsgate film was directed by Peter and Michael Spierig. The brothers also directed the 2003 film Undead., which was about the invasion of zombies upon a small Australian town.

Edward Dalton, played by Ethan Hawke, is searching for a blood substitute. He works for Big Farma [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a company that supplies blood and which is run by businessman Charles Bromley. Edward is unlike most of the population, including Charles Bromley, who voluntarily chose to become vampires. He was turned into a vampire by his brother, and does not like preying on humans to stay alive.
