ouple of years ago, before the current economic downturn hit the world, many buyers didn't even have a second look at used cars when they were in the market for a car. They went straight to the new car dealers. The recession resulted in more and more people considering the option of a used car. Since they are not used to negotiating with used car dealers [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they often commit serious and costly mistakes in the process.
When you buy a new car, the rules are different. Suddenly you can't just accept the car will be mechanically in a sound condition. If you have no technical knowledge, this can be rather bewildering. Remember one thing in this regard: with a used car the condition of the vehicle is of higher importance than the age of the car. You get one year old vehicles that look like they're twenty years old and you get twenty year old vehicles that look (and drive) like a one year old car.
Should you be living in a coastal town or city, cautiously inspect the car for any indication of rust. You should also be aware of the fact that a few less than honest car dealers will do a quick patch-up job when they spot rust on a car. Six months from now the original rust will re-appear and after than quickly spread to adjacent areas.
If you want to get a good indication as to whether the owner cared about his car, look at the condition of the bodywork and interior. Even if it is for sale at a bargain price, beware of a vehicle that has a lot of scratches and dents. The fact that the owner didn't care about the car's outside usually means he neglected it mechanically too. If the seats are full of cigarette burns and dirty, it should be the final nail in that car's coffin!
Never buy a car if it's service history is not available. Even if the dealer assures you that the car has been serviced at regular intervals, but he can't prove this, walk away. There are thousands of used cars with full service histories - you don't have to take any chances in this respect. A complete service history means a car has been well looked after mechanically. It will therefore be a good buy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even when it has a lot of miles on the clock.
There's no need to be a mechanic to do a few basic tests on a used car that you're interested in. Basically you have to employ common sense. Should the interior and paintwork be in a great condition, the car has a full service history and the engine is not full of oil, you only need to do a couple of other checks before coming to a decision.
Tires and exhaust systems are expensive. So are new batteries and shock absorbers. Check the condition of all these before you decide to buy a vehicle. If one or more of them need replacement, but the car is otherwise in a good condition [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ask for a reduction in the price.
Finally take the car for a test drive. Make sure the gears change smoothly and that no smoke is coming from the exhaust. Listen to any abnormal sounds from the gearbox, engine and differential. Once you have put a couple of used cars through this test, you will get the feel of it and eventually save yourself a lot of money.
