Otis Redding and co-author, guitarist Steve Cropper, recorded Dock of the Bay in November and December 1967 just before the plane crash that killed Redding. The song was released posthumously in 1968 after everything had changed for Redding and his family [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and R&B lost a great talent.
The young Otis Redding was strongly influenced by Little Richard, a fellow Macon, Georgia resident. He dropped out of high school to work to support his family. He toured with Little Richard's band, the Upsetters. Later he toured with Pinetoppers, which got him noticed. His very first recording was with the Pinetoppers. He got an opportunity to record for Stax records which began his recording career.
The only thing not moving is the dock itself. Even the sitter occasionally moves, if only to shoo the bug that forgot to read the memo. Everything from rowboats to cruise boats come and go from docks. One to thousands of passengers come and go, all with a specific purpose, some of which is is just wasting time. Even the fish and crabs can come and go under the dock without fear of being caught by the sitter. Time and tune roll on.
Ships and Tides Roll in and Away Again
Everything changes. Summers and sitters come and go, but the tides roll on and the music still plays.
Otis Redding's untimely death in 1967 robbed him of years of dock sitting time. Listen to a recording of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay anywhere and be instantly transported dockside. It's a great tribute to his talent that after so many years, one of his most recognized songs still evokes summer so clearly. Musings of summer are as much a part of this popular hit as docks are part of a bay. Redding's bay was San Francisco, but any bay, lake [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or river will do.

Winter cold creeps so completely into the center of the very bones, bringing its evil twin, lethargy. Morning sun begins the warming process, slowly spreading from the skin inward. Ever so slowly [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the resting bones awaken to the promise of warmth while the mind dreams of a new and ideal summer stretching ahead. This summer won't be too hot and the bugs will stay away. Children won't dare quarrel and there will be many ideal days to while away on the dock.
