As an encouragement to undertake the arduous quest for trans-
formationhagiographies were circulated of those who were
revered by the transmitters of the Shangqing corpus. The hagiog-
raphy of a famous immortal known by his formal title as the
Perfected Purple Yang was cherished by the Xu family who were
the original recipients of the Shangqing transmission. The
Perfected Purple Yangwas born Zhou Yishan in 80
bceduring
the Han period. According to the hagiographyhe practised a
technique known as the salutation of the sun and would get up
early to soak up the dawn lightthat is to sayenergy radiated at the

Zhou’s father caught him in the act one day and asked him what
he was doing. Zhou is said to have replied‘IYishanfrom the
bottom of my heart love the sunlight and the splendour of its
eternal radiance’ (Porkert1979p. 26). The hagiography goes
on to relate that after five years’ practice Zhou’s body became
so luminous and transparent that one could see his internal organs.
