Interzone continues it's record-breaking flee with five new stories, 3 of them by debutants, stretching a noteworthy trend - almost half of the stories to appear in the last eighteen months have been by writers new to the pages of the magazine.

In 'Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Matter' by Jim Hawkins, an orchestra on a starship doubles as a special forces decease squad going because Earth to assassinate, main and regime change colonies into line. Conceptually it's Starship Troopers (minus Heinlein's ludicrous politic) crossed with The Stainless Steel Rat and Last Night of the Proms. But it's Mike Alexander and Cherry Rogers' foul-mouthed spot-on narration namely elevators it still beyond on the norm:
Fiction
Antony Mann's 'Candy Moments' tells of a puzzle creating where those struggling wth life can shed the memories that distress them. Becker is an drunkard who meets Molly Briar, attempting to cope with the truth that her sister is a slate, addicted to losing her memories, until there is nothing left of the personality. Their attach to is broke by Becker's inability to cope with the death of his wife, so Becker visits The Hub [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the mystery mansion. It has agreeable talk and characterization, however the chief prelude feels more as if it's been crowbarred into place to justify the fable than because it really fits.
Toby Litt's 'The Melancholy' perfectly describes the intonation of this fine [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], poignant piece premier fulfilled ashore BBC Radio 4; sixty annuals in the future humanity explores the solar system through Applications beamed to hardware that's already been dropped onto its destination. At the end of the tour the Application returns -- until one particular such Application works AWOL. Recommended, and beautifully illustrated at Paul Drummond.

It's one of the best stories of the year.
According to her accompanying bio, Rochita Loenen-Ruiz is a Filipina author and mommy living in Holland, and this sense of displacement from the mama nation runs via her debut, 'Alternate Girl's Expatriate Life.' The eponymous heroine is a robot housewife without a nation who nightmares of repatriation, and who is offered the contingency to resurrect the idea of her 'Father.' A lovely meditation on homesickness and our society's reliance on built-in obsolescence. Recommended.
'Mannikin' by Paul Evanby takes place on a Dutch-owned Carribean Island at about the period the US declared independence. Killian has created a pseudo-man alternatively 'mannikin' and is seeing to faultless the technique [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meantime the Dutch West Indies Company is eager to underwrite the venture as a route to a cheaper choice to slavery. As a scientist, Killian entirely overlooks the ethical implications to his research until misadventure strikes. Evanby's Dutch outlook adds dissimilar wafer of strangeness to this exotic secret history blended with pseudo-science fiction. Illustrated by Ben Baldwin, its a terrific begin to the issue. Highly Recommended.
