Also impressive are the camera techniques employed throughout, particularly noteworthy are the use of fade to blacks for several brief scenes, where we become knowledgeable about characters through implication rather than visibility.
The American is a drama-thriller of style and structure. It’s a picture with reserved moments of action that turns up its artistic volume, marked by a blossoming love story and penetrating suspense.
The American is a Modern Day Classic
Joffe allows us to learn about Jack through the characters he surrounds himself with, who signify that which he is devoid of. Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) is a figure of faith and truth. Jack is neither. During a conversation between the two, we learn that history [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for Jack [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], holds little importance. Only the present matters.
The threat never passes. The danger is real. And that’s why with every turn he makes, every solitary moment he’s alone (and there are many), we’re inevitably fearful for Jack, a logical, instinctive hit man who is, strangely enough, likeable. It’s that very connection that engages us. We care enough about him that we’re left hoping he lives for another day.
Jack (George Clooney) is an on-the-run assassin skilled in crafting guns and perhaps even more skilled in using them. Jack’s being hunted, and after he escapes a near-death experience in Sweden, he heads to Italy to lay low until the threat passes. There, he’s instructed to fulfill a final assignment by his laconic superior, Pavel (Johan Leysen).
That’s why The American is so gripping. Based on Martin Booth’s novel, A Very Private Gentleman, writer Rowan Joffe’s (28 Weeks Later) tightly focused screenplay demands our attention. It’s a film that evokes feeling, in one way through its classical-style narrative, loosely structured to allow for the growth of its characters.
There’s also Clara (Violante Placido), an Italian prostitute who Jack becomes involved with. She’s the untouchable beauty his job prohibits him from having, the female touch he longs for.
It’s almost a sure bet that this film will not sit well with everyone. Some will take it as an action-thriller, only to find it slow in pace. There are bound to be claims that this is an uneventful picture where “nothing happens.” The great thing about art, though, is that it’s placed on display before us, where we examine it, discuss it, and express what we feel and what it means to us. The American will certainly mean different t
The movie also elicits emotion through its visuals. The American is magnificently directed by Corbijn, an accomplished and prominent still photographer in the music world. Corbijn has an excellent eye. From the film’s beautiful opening of a calm, frigid winter in the woods of Sweden, to its multiple landscape shots of Italy, to graceful transition shots, to cinematographer Martin Ruhe’s glorious array of lighting techniques, this is a visually gorgeous picture to look at.

The American Review
The American makes for one of the best pictures of the year [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and is a sure Oscar frontrunner for best picture and best actor. Clooney continues his wave of successful roles, seemingly getting better with age. Clooney’s trademark charm is all but gone, and replaced with grave intensity and fearful isolation in a quiet performance as a hunter who’s now become the hunted. As a tortured killer avoiding an expiration date, Clooney delivers.
