The first question everyone asks when a child is born – is it a boy or a girl? When the sex of the baby becomes known immediately they begin to treat the baby differently according to its gender. If its a girl, she will be treated gentler than a boy.
John Archer and Barbara Lloyd suggest, in the book Sex And Gender, 2nd edition paperback published August 12, 2002, that when it comes to differences between boys and girls there is more to it than merely biological make-up. Furthermore, there is strong evidence that being masculine and feminine tendencies are brought about by the social environment the children are brought up in. Biological differences between the sexes possibly are less important in determining what boys and girls could, or should do.
The question remains is it nature or nurture? The answer is it is a bit of both. Nature in the womb but also nurture plays a huge part. When a innocent baby is born what is the need to put it in box and label it male or female. Why not just let it play and be allow it to be a child? There has to be something said for focus less on the gender and more on the individual characteristics of the child.
This must have some effects on why throughout childhood – little girls are more interested in adults – and are more likely to comfort another child in their peer group. Meanwhile, boys are more assertive, more focus on building things and are more determined to win at a competition. This of course is not always the case.
Girls tend to exceed boys when talking about their emotions. They are also much better at interpreting facial expressions. For example they always want to dress up and like to play school teachers, whereas boys like to take more risks and are likely to overestimate what they can and can’t do. Boys like to climb or ride the biggest bike in the playground – bigger always equals better in the case of little boys.
