Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian DVD Review
Prince Caspian film review
Violent Caspian
Prince Caspian is more of a straightforward war film than Wardrobe, which was a more cuddly and traditional fantasy. Given that the franchise’s target audience includes children, the more violent Prince Caspian may have pushed that segment away.
Weaker Caspian?
It will be interesting to see what develops with this franchise for the future. Variety has already reported that director Michael Apted will be helming the third film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which will likely need to be by far the best of the series in order to overcome the lackluster reception of Prince Caspian. It appears Narnia will have to fight to turn itself into the Harry Potter-style film franchise it so desperately wanted, and appeared set to be, after Wardrobe.
Competing with Jones and Iron Man
The first Narnia film was released on December 9th, 2005 (in the There was no tent pole picture playing the weekend behind it, though it did have to deal with King Kong the weekend after. In contrast Prince Caspian had the misfortune of playing between two mega-hits, Iron Man and Indiana Jones, which would draw away many of the same moviegoers who might have otherwise seen Prince Caspian. And the competition may not just be affecting stateside returns; Iron Man and Indiana Jones have cumulatively grossed over $600 million overseas since their releases.
class="dynamic">Narnia?
The first film in the Narnia franchise, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, grossed over $700 million dollars worldwide and close to $300 million in the according to variety.com. The second film Prince Caspian [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has so far only grossed $116 million in the U.S. and a little over $50 million overseas. Why did the Narnia franchise experience such a steep decline, so quickly? Why did a franchise that appeared set to challenge Harry Potter for box office and longevity with many more C.S. Lewis books left to adapt, suddenly hit the skids?
The second film seems to have been slightly less well-received, according to critic tracker rottentomatoes.com, which lists Wardrobe at 75% positive reviews versus 65% for Prince Caspian. Prince Caspian is also the second film in the franchise, and so missing the sense of discovery of the first film.
The Real Reason
The Future of Narnia
Perhaps the real reason fans haven’t returned for a second helping of Narnia is that many of them weren’t blown away by the first. It certainly was an event film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it was well-scheduled and the first of its franchise, which brought a certain excitement. Neither film has been of the utmost quality, and perhaps after the first casual fans of the Narnia fantasy lost interest.
