Be careful of The Blob
The Blob and the Silly Song
The rest is pretty simple. One of the police officers is quite likable, while the others are immediately dismissive of Steve’s cries for help, the cast of ‘teenagers’ are all attractive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and of course the dog gets to survive. A question mark even forms out of the words ‘The End’, to really drive home the hokey nature of the whole enterprise. All in all it does exactly what it says on the tin, rarely exceptional but never boring. Best watched with alcohol.

In fact these few lyrics pretty much tell you everything you need to know about the film, making this review rather redundant. Still, there are a few things worth pointing out.
Across the floor
And all around the wall
Witnessing the crash of a meteor, Steve Andrews (Steve McQueen) and Jane Martin (Aneta Corsaut) go to investigate, only to discover a man screaming in fear as a alien life-form attaches itself to his arm. They rush him to the local doctor, who struggles to remove the creature which is consuming its victim at an alarming rate. Steve goes to the police but soon events get out of control.

Beware of The Blob, it creeps
The Blob is a film with no surprises. An alien lands on Earth and consumes everything in its path. Eventually they find something to stop it, thus ending its rein of terror. It’s not difficult to work out every predictable beat of the film but that doesn’t stop it from being an enjoyable hour and a half of camp silly nonsense. Partly this is due to the fact that no one making this is taking it seriously and nor is there any attempt to create any substance or nuance in the story. This is apparent right from the opening credits as we are treated to a song with these lyrics;
Most importantly this marks Steve McQueen’s leading man debut. One of the most iconic movie stars to have ever lived,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], McQueen’s presence goes a long way to making this a highly enjoyable experience. While the then 28 year old is hardly convincing as a high school student, this is a performance delivered by someone who’s in desperate need of a career break. Because of this the laidback coldness that made him so iconic is absent but its surprising how much screen presence he still has. It certainly could have been a lot worse and with the benefit of hindsight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], does show a hint of the man’s talents.

The other point of interest, the blob itself, is a mixed bag. Some of the effects are quite good as it latches itself to the old man’s hand and oozes through air conditioning vents in the cinema scenes. Other effects,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as the strange animated looking thing towards the end remain wholly unconvincing. Also it doesn’t really do a lot either, for something which can get through every nook and cranny; it just kind of sits there for much of the finale. This is probably due to the limited budget of the independent production.
