Groupings of Animals and People
The main dilemma with collective nouns is whether to use them with a singular or plural verb. Most style and grammar books agree that the general rule is to treat collective nouns as a singular unless the meaning is clearly plural, but this is not always as simple as it sounds.
Sometimes the choice of singular or plural verb comes down to the variety of English. For example, with a collective noun like government, British English treats it as a plural, and American and Canadian English uses a singular verb.
The couple is arguing.
Singular or Plural, That is the Question
In this case, only the individuals within the couple can be arguing. Of course [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this could change if more information is added to the initial sentence, allowing for the use of the singular verb to emphasize the united front of the two people in the couple, such as in the case of “the couple is arguing with the waitress”.
For example:

It’s in the Numbers
Certain adjectives can become collective nouns by simply adding the article "the" in front of them. This works especially well for adjectives identifying a class of people (the rich) or denoting an abstract characteristic (the beautiful).
This means that these two people are going shopping together as a unit.
Various individuals, who do not necessarily plan to come together, will be attending this party.
These parts of speech are often, but not always, followed by another noun, which describes the group, such as “a flock of sheep”. Some nouns, for example, ending in –age and –ade as in baggage and brigade, are generally automatically collective nouns.

In other words, the entire group of university students overall is increasing.
Note that mass nouns should not be confused with collective nouns. Mass nouns are “non-count” nouns, whereas collective nouns technically can be counted. For example, water is a mass noun, because it cannot be counted (unless the context is at a microscopic level with water particles), and therefore takes a singular verb. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a collective noun like team can be broken down into its individual parts (members), and therefore is a countable noun.
In certain cases, the use of a singular or plural verb depends on the article placed in front of a collective noun.
Many collective nouns clearly emphasize the group as a unit, such as the word “crowd”, but there are certain actions that imply individuals within a group rather than the group as a whole are involved, so perspective comes into play.
Some of the more interesting collective nouns are used to describe groups of animals. Many of these special collective nouns date back to hunting practices during Mediaeval times. At the time in English, these nouns even distinguished between different contexts for a given animal. So geese on the ground were known as a “gaggle of geese” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as they are today, but in flight would be termed a “skein of geese”.
A number of people are going to the party.
For example:
Quantities expressed with a unit of measurement or currency are understood to be plural, but take a singular verb. For example, “Two hundred dollars was paid on the debt" or “Two feet was sufficient to bury the box”.
“The couple is going shopping”
The number of university students is increasing.
