Government shouldin honestytry to convert the British electorate to
the idea that they should accept a lower standard of living in order to get
rid of the evils of colonialism. ‘Freedom for the Coloniesand a Lower
Standard of Living for all’that would have been his election rallying cry.
It was impossible not to respect the integrity of his ideas and the serious-
ness with which they were put forwardinevitable that Muggeridge and
Powell should see him primarily as an English eccentric with a great fund
of out-of-the-way knowledgeand strongly held opinions about such
matters as the proper way of making tea and of cooking steak and kidney
pudding. His eccentricity manifested itself in his actions as well as in his
arguments. Thus he took a tremendousalmost childishpleasure in
bringing back from Germany a ball-bearing penat a time when they
were not obtainable in Englandand he appeared one day in an extra-
ordinary garment with which he was greatly delightedan old army
greatcoat dyed mud brownof which he said proudly (and wrongly): ‘You
won’t guess what this is.’ He was anxious always to get clothes such as he
thought a workman might wearand when Muggeridge was going to
