hough it really is a highly individualized experience, all people actually enter different stages of sleep. It is divided into 5 stages- 4 non-REM stages and the final stage of REM sleep. All go through all these stages, but the pattern in which people progress and regress from one stage to another differs.
The earliest stage is when people feel they’re half awake and still alert. Therefore, people in this stage are easily awakened. The brain then relaxes and brain waves slow down. This is also the time when think you are falling from a cliff or somebody is calling you. These are called sleep related hallucinations. This initial stage of stage 1 non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is characterized by the transition between wakefulness and sleep.
The second stage is not much of a big leap as it is also a light form of sleep but it is at this time when vital signs such as temperature and pulse rate begin to slow down.
Stage 3 is when one is about to cross the line between the light and deep sleep. It is characterized by the emergence of delta waves, until it reaches to stage 4 which is the actual delta sleep.
It is called a delta sleep is where one could consistently see slow brain waves. Because a person is now in a deep sleep, this is the time where a person is difficult to awaken. Upon awakening, a person is somewhat disoriented. This is important for all people because all of us need to physically rest, to be able to relax, recharge and regain all the energy that was expended during the waking hours. This is also found to be beneficial for the immune system.
The last stage, the stage 5 REM sleep is where most of the dream episodes are experienced. As its name implies, this is the stage is where dreams are often experienced. If physical strength has been regained in the previous stage, the dream sleep stage now focuses on emotions, retaining memories and relieving stress. Vital signs also change - breathing becomes rapid, irregular and shallow. An increase in heart rate and blood pressure is also observed. Moreover, males may even have penile erections, while females may have clitoral enlargement.
This sleep pattern is initially progressive. However, after progressing from a lower to a higher stage, it may go back to a lower stage once it is at a deep stage. There may be a series of upward and downward pattern that can be seen.
Vital to a good sleep are the last 2 stages of deep and dream sleep. REM sleep actually affects both emotions and cognition. It is therefore believed to impact on mood, learning capacities and the ability to develop new skills.
Some people however cannot reach these final stages of sleep. For some with one or two day sleep debt, they can be possibly pay it back with longer sleeping hours the next day.
