Advance of Civilization Through the Bond of World Postal Union, America and the Orient, Spirit of Civilization and Progress, Intercommunication Between Europe and Africa. Below the tympanums, the bands of metopes (flat spaces between triglyphs in a frieze) depict primitive methods of communication that include such methods as smoke signals, carrier pigeons, drums, and blanket symbols.
The Supreme Court of the United States
The Archives of the United States of America has a tympanum titled Destiny. Weinman and John Russell Pope were the artists of the tympanum, a beautifully carved, deep relief with highly muscled male figures, stocky horses, and flowing drapery.
The Agriculture Department Building has four tympanums that depict Fruit, Flowers, Cereals, and Forestry. All four of the tympanums feature two seated male figures facing each other across a shield bearing the title of the tympanum. The poses of the figures are different for each, and the backgrounds behind the figures contain the featured products.
A. A. Weinman is best known for his coin designs, which was an irritation to him. He designed the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty half dollar, the design later used on silver dollars. He also designed military and other medals, but vehemently asserted that he was primarily an architectural sculptor.
Inside the Great Hall of the court, Weinman's art stands above the proceedings. Weinman was given the discretion to choose which figures to represent. The east wall frieze stands directly above the bench. The two main figures on the east wall are Power of Government and Majesty of Law. Between the figures is a column inscribed with Roman numerals I to X representing the Bill of Rights (the first ten amendments to the Constitution). Other allegorical figures representing the law are found on the east and west friezes.
On the Jefferson Memorial, Weinman depicts the signing of the Declaration of Independence with the founding fathers seated at a long table around the standing figure of Jefferson. The sculpture is centered in the tympanum which has no other decoration. The relief is deep in places [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not ornately carved.
Tours of Washington, D.C. take place at ground level. Don't forget to look up at the beautiful architectural sculptures that embody American principles carved in stone. Federal architecture tells the American story. German born sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman immigrated to America with his mother at the age of ten. He studied with renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and worked in the studios of Philp Martiny, Olin Warner, Charles Niehaus [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Daniel Chester French before opening his own studio in 1904.

Federal Architecture Featuring Weinman Sculptures
The north and south friezes contain both historical and allegorical figures of lawgivers. The allegorical figures have wings which the historical figures, that go as far back as Menes (about 3200 BC), lack. The metopes below the friezes repeat fifteen different symbolic figures around the chamber.
One of the largest bodies of Weinman's work is his architectural sculptures on Federal buildings. The buildings include the following, and pictures can be viewed at D.C. Memorials. There you can view the sculptures straight on, rather than at an angle from the street.
