After the Civil War, he studied and began practicing law. He was elected to the House of Representatives and served until 1883 and again from 1885-91, making a name for himself with the McKinley Tariff. In 1892, he was elected governor of Ohio.

McKinley was nominated for president in 1896 and conducted a "front porch campaign.” He was opposed by William Jennings Bryan, who gave his famous "Cross of Gold" speech, in which he opposed the gold standard.
Spanish-American War
In 1898, he called for war against Spain due in part to the sinking of the battleship Maine. Most Americans, including McKinley, wanted to avert war, but after a series of incidents, expansionists determined to forge an American Empire prevailed.
Claiming the United States had an obligation to assume responsibility for "the welfare of an alien people,” McKinley instructed the American peace commission to obtain the entire Philippine archipelago as a colony for a payment of $20 million.
The chief issue was whether silver or gold should back the currency. McKinley was popular in urban, industrial areas and with ethnic labor groups, appealing to all classes in a realignment of American politics. He also had the solid support of big business and won with 271 electoral votes.

In the Treaty of Paris ratified by the Senate on February 6, 1899, Spain renounced all claims to Cuba and ceded Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the marking America’s emergence as a world power that had established an overseas empire.
The inauguration of the 25th president was the first to be captured on film, and McKinley became the first chief executive to appear extensively in movies. He soon proved his claim as the "advance agent of prosperity" with a revival of business.
They urged armed intervention on behalf of the Cubans. McKinley proposed an armistice, but under pressure from the expansionists, he was won over to the war cause. The American cry of the hour became: "Remember the Maine, To Hell with Spain!"
On this day in history, September 14, 1901 Puma Footwear, President William McKinley died in Buffalo, of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin. He was succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, who vowed to continue his conservative policies.
As commander in chief, McKinley monitored all phases of the Spanish-American War. The poorly supplied Spanish were easily defeated by the U.S. armed forces, with 385 Americans losing their lives in combat, 2,061 stricken by disease Puma Speed Cat, and 1,662 wounded.
Addressing Congress on April 11, McKinley asked for authority to intervene in Cuba, and resolutions were passed demanding Spanish withdrawal. Congress authorized volunteer troops and a blockade. After Spain declared war Puma Clydes, the U.S. did so on April 25.
Born in Ohio in 1843, McKinley attended public school and enrolled in Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, but dropped out due to illness. He served in the infantry from 1861-65 and saw action at Antietam, rising to the rank of major.
"We could not leave them to themselves,” McKinley said of the Filipinos, “they were unfit for self-government - and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain's was ... there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them."
