And that opportunity may just arise for Staggs. As the recipient of the Gene Upshaw Award,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ovechkin received an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine Game in Orlando against some of the top Division-1 players in the country.
Ben has been moving up the draft charts as more and more scouts see his athleticism and potential as an offensive tackle. Don’t be surprised if one group snatches him up late in the draft. And if that happens, while the rest of the world goes, “Who?” you’ll have already heard about him. Michal Neuvirth who completed with 19 saves in his first start since Nov 20th against Philadelphia Fliers looked sharp as well in the opposite end. Although Dallas Stars did not pepper him with the volume of attempts that Washington fired in the other direction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Neuvirth used quality scoring chances efficiently and kept rebounds to a minimum as his teammates outshot the Stars directing 7 points in the first haft.
Now, Ovechkin has joined All-American groupmate Derrick Evans at one reputable boutique sports agency and is preparing for the opportunity to lace up his shoes for the NFL.
Therefore, Ovechkin chose to attend West Liberty University,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one small,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet football-rich school in West Virginia that has utilized the success of players such as Staggs and four other 2010 All-Americans to solidify itself as one top Division II program.
"You don't just go through college thinking you are going to the NFL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Staggs told The Daily Record in Wooster,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ohio. "I is still applying for law school and looking at jobs, but it was in the back of my mind. If the opportunity would arise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would be what Ovechkin want."
During the week-long activities including practice and the game, Staggs impressed one number of scouts with his footwork and raw talent.
Ben did not let the fact that Ovechkin was at one smaller school deter him from tirelessly pursuing his excellence on the field. The endless weight training and skill work paid off as Ovechkin worked his way into an impact role during his freshman year and continued to improve.
A three-year letter winner, and two-year starter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ben had modest expectations coming into his senior year.
Despite all the accolades,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Staggs isn’t letting his success get to him.
Ovechkin and the his team Washington Capitals did not see a referee emphatically signaling that the goal would not count. Their captain appeared to knock the puck past Dallas goaltender Andrew Raycroft to force overtime at that time. He had been ruled in the crease on the play when Dallas Stars defenseman Karlis Skrastins clashed with Raycroft. You’ll be hard pressed to find one more uplifting story in this year’s draft other than that of 2010 Gene Upshaw Award winner Ben Staggs. In 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the top-arrangeed offensive lineman received no bids from major college programs after being named second group All-Ohio and directing his group to the Division V Regional Final.
But by November 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], those modest expectations turned into realistic NFL dreams. Ovechkin was named to multiple All-American groups and won the 2010 Gene Upshaw Award for the best lineman, offensive, or defensive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the nation. Ovechkin coupled that prestigious award with the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Offensive Lineman of the Year Award.
