What is the Cost of Prescription Fish Oil Versus OTC Products
By: milton haslam
It is unlikely that anyone would be surprised by the huge increase in sales of over-the -counter [OTC] fish oil supplements. The drug companies have certainly noticed. Consequently, we have something new - a prescription [rx] fish oil product called Lovaza. What consumers are wondering is why is the price so high? After all fish oil is food. How is Lovaza different from an OTC supplement and how can they explain the cost of prescription fish oil?
Lets answer the last question first. The cheapest coast that I could find for Lovaza is 10 times as much as a quality fish oil supplement. Let me repeat that . The cost of prescription fish oil is 10 [!] times as much as a comparable OTC product.
First a little background. The reason that people take OTC fish oil supplements is because of the omega 3 fatty acids in them. These omega 3s are part of every cell membrane in the body, and the lack of them causes serious health issues in every organ that we have. Because of our modern day diets that rely on vegetable oil based foods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ninety per cent of us here in the West are deficient in these essential omega 3s. It is no coincidence that as our omega 3 consumption has declined,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the rate of heart, joint, eye and brain problems has risen. Educated consumers know this and that is why the OTC supplement market has expanded so rapidly.
Of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the question that comes to consumers mind is how does this justify the cost of prescription fish oil supplements?
The makers of Lovaza know that their omega 3s are no different than the omega 3s that are in fish oil. They claim that they have more of them. They also say that their products are free of contaminants.
These two statements are true. A 1000mg prescription capsule will have about 50% more omega 3s than a quality OTC product. This is nothing new. OTC companies can concentrate their omega 3 content higher if they want to. For instance, there are several species of tuna whose oil can be concentrated higher than Lovaza. The problem is that the body does not absorb it as well. For some reason, we get more anti-inflammatory benefits if the supplement is consumed like food, which is what it is. This is one reason why we eat three meals a day instead of one big one at breakfast.
Their second point about contaminants is an important one. There are scores of OTC supplements out there that are of doubtful purity and freshness. However, the quality products are and have been as pollutant free as Lovaza for years.
Let us summarize some points to find out if the cost of prescription fish oil is needed. For those wanting large doses of omega 3s, they can be gotten just as safely from a good OTC supplement. Next,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the quality ones have added various antioxidants to the mix in order to protect against any side effects from high doses.
