an aid to meditation on the figure of Laozi as a celestial deity.
The role of Laozi in the organization of the community is fur-
ther evident in the form of an important commentary on the
Daode jingthat is attributed to either Zhang himself or his grand-
son (see Bokenkamp1997). The full version of this commentary
known as Xiang’er(perhaps meaning ‘Thinking of You’)is
extant in a version found in the excavation of the Dunhuang caves
and dated around 600 ceand effectively interprets the rather
enigmatic aphorisms of the Daode jinginto a system of precepts for

the members of the community. It should be noted that some
scholars believe this text originated in the later southern Celestial
Masters’ tradition of the fifth century and not the original Han
dynasty movement (see Hendrischke2000p. 146; Kobayashi
1987)however the text effectively promotes a religious ideology
according to which meditation on the figure of Laozi is rewarded
with good fortune and long life.
