Personal survival courses are recommended and specifically aimed to help skippers and crew who are intending to sail outside sheltered waters. In The Sea Survival Manual for Cruising and Professional Yachtsmen, Howarth & Howarth (2005) highlight that personal survival courses for sailors, will likely include the following:
For those living in the UK, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) are able to offer skippers and crew the RYA Sea Survival Course. This is a one-day course aimed at anyone going to sea, with a mix of theory and practical sessions in a swimming pool, making it important to bring appropriate swim wear and towel. Course topics included in the RYA Sea Survival Course, include as follows:
In addition, for those sailing to locations where malaria is a problem and where HIV and other blood-borne diseases are common, it is important to take key precautions, such as antimalarial tablets and bring a medical kit with clean syringes. Clearly much of the above survival training will be relevant regardless of where one is sailing, with it also being crucial to take enough essential supplies in terms of food and drink for whilst at sea.
RYA Sea Survival Course
There has been an increased interest in personal survival courses over the past decade, particularly following the tragic events which unfolded during the 1998 Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race. Personal survival courses include a range of theory sessions on how to cope with difficult situations whilst at sea.
Personal Survival at Sea Courses – Key Topics
Source:
As highlighted above, personal survival courses save lives, with many different courses now available, such as the RYA Sea Survival Course in the UK. Survival courses for skippers and crew offer essential skills, through theory and practical sessions, on topics such as man overboard recovery, VHF usage, life-rafts, pyrotechnics, search and rescue techniques and first aid.

It has been shown that those who have even basic sea survival or personal survival skills, through attending a survival course, have a far greater chance of surviving forms of disaster at sea. Therefore it is well worth taking the time and investing in a sea survival training course, as part of preparation for sailing outside sheltered waters.
