, a boy in Beaver County, an area northwest of Pittsburgh, PA, had a seizure in a theater about a half hour into watching 'Avatar'. The child had experienced seizures previously, but it was still unexpected and the child's mother was distressed. It is not clear if the movie alone was the trigger for the seizure.

3D Movie Avatar :Storyline and Visual Effects
Defining Epilepsy
A person has to be susceptible to seizures to be affected by flashing lights in a theatre, and people taking medication to protect against seizures are generally advised to avoid triggers, such as strobe lights, the flashing in the movies and casinos; sleep deprivation; and video games with on-and-off screen flashes.
It is unclear whether movie effects or other visual stimuli can cause a seizure or other physical discomfort; most reports are anecdotal and not scientific.
Estimates state that about 3 to 5 percent of the 3 million Americans with epilepsy are photosensitive, but the actual prevalence of photosensitivity is unclear. If a person has photosensitive epilepsy, as it is called, a strong visual overload like a movie’s flash effects could induce a seizure. People that have photosensitivity can have it aggravated by being in a theater in the dark, then exposed to the sudden flashing lights or visual effects in a movie, or in another similar environment like a nightclub or message board contains posts reporting concerns that the movie's flashing lights, 3D effects and fast-moving scenes are causing some individuals to experience sensations of discomfort such as: nausea, dizziness, difficulty walking, headaches, and seizures.

There are 50 million people worldwide that have epilepsy; approximately 3 million of those people with epilepsy are in the U.S. A discussion thread at Epilepsy.com contains posts from many people claiming to have personally had a seizure while viewing Avatar or knowing someone else who had experienced such a seizure.

A 1993 population-based study on photosensitivity in Great Britain resulted in interesting data. The results showed that although the number of people who tested as being "photosensitive", actual seizures occurred infrequently when exposed to the visual stimuli in the study.
Photosensitive Epilepsy
"There are people who have epilepsy who can have their symptoms triggered by visual stimuli,” said Dr. James P. Valeriano

, a Pittsburgh neurologist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The neurologist also said watching 3D movies may cause seizures. Even if a moviegoer does not have photosensitive epilepsy, but another type of seizure disorder, the excessive visual stimuli from a 3D movie or one with excessive flashing lights could possibly lower their threshold for a seizure.
Photosensitive epilepsy was brought to wide public attention in late 1997 when the Pokémon episode "Electric Soldier Porygon" was broadcast in Japan. It depicted a sequence of quickly flashing red lights after an exploding bomb, that triggered seizures simultaneously in hundreds of viewers about 20 minutes into the cartoon.
