Food banks need people to help separate donated canned goods as well as volunteers to hand boxes or bags to those in need. Opportunities to volunteer for community service projects are available through schools, churches, synagogues and local agencies. Families that do community service projects together often find that it draws them closer with a common bond. Take some time each week to write letters to soldiers, letting them know how much they are appreciated. They’ll also enjoy receiving cards for special occasions and gifts to bring a little bit of home to them. For those who don’t have the name of a soldier, consider taking up a monetary collection and donating to an organization that puts together care packages for military troops. “Support Our Troops,” an article on Military.com states that packages and letters with “Any Service Member” will not be delivered. Depending on the demographics of the community, there may be a need for workers at homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Most cities and towns have food banks that are always open to donations of food or cash. Many of these charities are run by one or two staff members and as many volunteers as they can find. Elderly Assistance Offer assistance as an after-school tutor for single-parent families or to help parents who have to work all day and have very little time in the evenings to get everything done. They will appreciate their children being able to do their homework, and the kids will enjoy having someone closer to their age helping them with their lessons. The extra benefit is that a special lifetime bond may form. The elderly often need extra assistance with daily living activities.
