ad86 for the ?rst Christian activity in China
is con?rmedit will probably indicate – what might have been sus-
pected anywaythe even earlier presence of Judaismfor the Church
generally began by grasping the coattails of the synagogue before
turning to the Gentiles. Consequentlythe Christianity which will
have reached China by ad86 will have been Semitic rather than
Greek in languageand may still have adhered to the law. Jewish
communities certainly existed in Persia in post-exilic Old Testament
timesand from them later Zoroastrianism borrowed the doctrine of
a messiahjust as it borrowed a stricter dualism from Manichaeism.
These communities were of a pre-Christian Judaic kind: that ismes-
sianic expectation was still highand rabbinic orthodoxytannaitic
or amoraiticwas not yet established. It was natural then that
Christian missionaries should use them as stepping-stones to China.
When such Jewish communities ?rst reached China is not clear. An
inscription in the K’ai-feng synagogue dated 1663 claimed that the
religion had been in China since Chouthat is preimperialtimes
before 221bc. This is not impossiblebut the tradition recorded by a
