Setting up some kind of moving water in the pond can help move the debris to your filter instead of just sitting stagnant. This can either be a pump that has an attachment for a fountain or building a small waterfall that flows into the pond.
The problem of excessive nitrates and ammonia can be diagnosed by taking a water sample. You can buy water sampling kits at any pet store. Your ph should be between 7.5 and 8.5. Your ammonia and nitrate level should be zero. If you find that your ammonia and nitrate levels are high you can buy an algaecide that will balance the level of ammonia and nitrates in the water.
Another cause can be over-feeding or over-stocking your fish. Many people worry that their fish don’t eat enough so they tend to over-feed.
As far as feeding your fish, you should only give your fish enough food that they can eat in five minutes. If after five minutes there is still food on the surface then it’s a good idea to cut back.
