Bonus features on the DVD include behind-the scenes of Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove, deleted scenes and outtakes. There is also an adorable video diary from Bindi which documents her experience making her first movie. And there is a feature introducing viewers to the various animals that take part in the film.
Bindi’s exuberance is addicting and the fun she had making the film comes across in her performance as well as the bonus features. She is a cute little girl and definitely has a long career ahead of her should she decide to continue acting.
When Kirra learns that the other amusement park is going to buy Willy and build an aquarium for him, she knows she must not let this happen. She steps up her training as well as the search for Willy’s pod.
Kirra starts training Willy to develop his sonar abilities. With the help of a local boy who works in the park, they start training Willy. Willy and Kirra form a tight bond and become best friends. He trusts her and looks out for her. Willie even takes her on rides through the cove and they spend all their time together, when he is not on display for her grandfather.
Bindi Irwin grew up around wild animals. Her father was “The Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, so Bindi knows about nature. This is her first role in a feature film. Bindi stars along with Beau Bridges in this heartwarming story.
Kirra (Irwin) lives in Australia with her father, a veterinarian. After he has an accident and is going to be hospitalized for a long time, he sends her to stay with her maternal grandfather Gus (Bridges) who owns a dilapidated amusement park in South Africa. The park is run-down and not doing well, business-wise. It has to compete against a larger amusement park which is more modern and has at least ten times the amount of fun for children and adults. Gus has no money to invest in his business. He is a gambler and has gambled away his money through the years. What he earns is soon gone.
One night, a storm washes a young orca into the cove. The orca is trapped by the rocks with no way back to the ocean. Kirra knows her grandfather will exploit the whale for profit. Ca-ching. But she also knows that she has to look out for the little orca and somehow get it back to its pod. She names the whale Willy jordan retro 7, and does everything she can to get him to eat. The little guy is afraid and confused, but Kirra does not give up.
Bindi’s little brother has a small part in the film, and the bonus features show him as well as her mother during the filming process.
A Young Orca Named Willie
When the mammal rescue people come and test the whale jordans for cheap, they discover he has not developed his sonar abilities, so without that and without his pod to teach him, he would not survive in the ocean. They say they would recommend putting him down. But Kirra insists that he is not going to be put down.
