This historical film is presented to make the 217 minutes it runs fly by. While not a typical man for his era, Johnson's article nonetheless provides an informative backdrop for understanding this period in American history. With dialogue from James Earl Jones, this film captures a peerless figure in the history of boxing and a life fraught with deep despair and remarkable amiability. While it may be afflicting to listen almost the behavior of many American citizens during this era, it is brought to life by Ken Burns and his excellent documentary. Even in victory, Johnson stood unattended, surrounded by the shameful behavior of human creatures who were unable to accept him.
