Giants QB Jim Sorgi has unique view of Manning Bowl (with Eli Manning video)
EAST RUTHERFORD — Jim Sorgi can’t help the Giants win any games this season, but he sure could play a vital role in helping them survive their next big challenge.
Since he was Peyton Manning’s backup in Indianapolis for six years before coming to the Giants to be Eli Manning’s understudy, Sorgi has some idea what the G-Men need to do to win the second Manning vs. Manning Bowl that comes up Sunday night at the Colts’ Lucas Oil Dome (NBC Channels 4, 10).
This season ended for Sorgi last week with surgery on his right shoulder after being hurt in the second period of Big Blue’s pre-season opener against the Jets.
As soon as he showed up in the Giants’ locker room yesterday Sorgi was surrounded by reporters who picked his brain about how the brothers will react to the NFL’s much-hyped duel.
“I’m sure they’re not talking this week,” said Sorgi, his arm in a sling. “If I know Peyton he’s not very happy now. It’s going to be a heckuva show Sunday night.”
A show made more intense because the Giants want to be 2-0 for a third straight year and the Colts seek to avoid their first 0-2 start in 12 seasons.
“I have a lot of information on them (Colts) because having been there six years I helped put in a lot of the information they use,” said Sorgi. “Sometimes how much you know doesn’t matter. It’s all about execution.”
“The competitive aspect of this game is that their quarterback and our quarterback are both preparing for our team,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “We are going to play the Colts and that is how Eli will look at it — and nothing different.
“We have to go to their place — a dome — andwe have all of that to be concerned with as well. It’s the competitive aspect that comes to the front, and that is where it stays,” added Coughlin, who said he’s “only visited with Sorgi a bit” and not asked for defensive tips.”
“I can give our defense all the information I can about how to get to Peyton before the ball comes out. You can know what formation they’ll use,MLB Jerseys, and what route is coming, and still not cover. Getting to a receiver is all about how you play your coverage, and being luck” explained Sorgi.
“You can get to him and hit him early, but you’ve got to force turnovers and get them to put once in a while. Hopefully you put up more points than they do,” said Sorgi.
In the short time he’s been around Sorgi has seen a resemblence between the brothers, although Peyton is six years older.
“Not only are their mannerisms the same, but the way they talk. The way they do certain things you can tell their DNA is the same. Their games are a little different on the field. They’re different people, but you can tell they’re brothers.”
Peyton’s Colts won Manning Bowl I to open the 2006 season here, 26-21, although Big Blue was in position late to win. |
