Arizona Cardinals strive to follow [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]'s example
Cardinals cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was being asked about the dominating performance of teammate [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in Sunday's win over the St. Louis Rams and he couldn't help but interrupt the question so he could answer it.
"Look," Rodgers-Cromartie said, "if everybody can just raise our level to his play, we're going to be a pretty scary team to play against this year."
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] was everywhere during the Cardinals' 17-13 season-opening win. He blocked a field goal, registered a sack on rookie quarterback Sam Bradford and intercepted two passes, the last of which secured the victory.
"Adrian probably worked as hard as anyone in the off-season with a focus, a determination, and his leadership is a big part of the reason why we had such a good attendance with our off-season program," Whisenhunt said.
"When you have guys that do that and then they play a game like they did (Sunday), it's very easy to point to it and say, 'Look, this is why. This guy put the time in. This is why it showed up in the game.' It's great for our team to see, especially when you have so many young guys watching and following."
When the veteran [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] started texting and calling teammates early this spring to start joining him at the Cardinals' training facility to begin off-season workouts, players began pouring in.
"I did it because he's a guy who's been in this league a long time and has been productive, and he knows how to do the right things," Rodgers-Cromartie said. "So if he's in there early doing things and that's what it takes to be like him, that's what I'm going to do."
No one can be sure what the Cardinals will do this season, but if they show the same dedication and guts as [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it could be an intangible that makes a difference.
And there are glaring signs that it already is taking shape. Just look at the play in the Rams' game when quarterback Derek Anderson was sacked and fumbled in the third quarter. Rams defensive tackle Clifton Ryan picked up the ball and began barreling toward the end zone, but receiver Steve Breaston raced downfield and knocked the ball out of his hands.
Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein, accompanied by fellow linemen Brandon Keith and Levi Brown, hustled after Breaston, and Sendlein recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback.
"That's a game-changing play for us," Whisenhunt said. "When you talk about kids watching this game and how it should be played,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you want to point to one thing, that play is what you point to.
" . . . And to have those big guys turn and run and make the effort they did, that's going to serve you well as you go forward as a team. That's what effort, finish and hustle is all about."
And guess what Sendlein points to when describing the genesis of that can-do attitude? He mentions [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and the team's committed off-season workout program.
"We did OK, but we can do better," [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said of Sunday's four-point win. " . . . We're going to try to get better this week."
Surely [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] couldn't have played much better. Ask him if that was as complete of a game as he could have played, though, and he'll look you dead in the eye and give you a one-word answer.
"No."
