The Maharajas of the princely states of India, until 1948, amassed large collections of jewels consisting of diamonds, pearls, rubies and emeralds. The Hope Diamond, the Patiala Necklace, the Baroda Pearls are just some of the famous jewels.
The famous Patiala Necklace designed by Cartier in 1928 for the Maharaja, was a five-stranded bib necklace mounted with 2,930 diamonds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a central pendent of a 234.65-carat de Beers diamond. The Maharaja would commission hundreds of items from the house of Cartier and an equal number from the house of Boucheron.
The most famous and magnificent collection of jewels came from the flamboyant Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh, who in true flashy Punjabi style,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], went in for the glitziest lifestyle. His numerous wives, concubines , expensive cars , a personal Philharmonic orchestra , palaces and aircraft and even his penchant for having photographs clicked in full military or princely regalia reflected his love for the ostentatious.
Among the prominent Maharajas and princes mentioned in history for their love of famous diamonds and pearls and other jewels is the Maharaja of Patiala, the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Maharaja of Baroda and the princely family of Nawanagar. Each were patrons of big designer houses like Cartier, Boucheron, Van Cleef and Arpel. Harry Winston was a great buyer of these jewels especially when post-independence the Princes ceased to exist in the newly democratic India.
India was known as the “Jewel in the Crown” signifying its importance in the colonies of the British. Known as the “Golden Bird” since ancient times, its riches were famed throughout the world and the reputation was enhanced further through the jewels and opulence of the Maharajas who ruled the various princely states before India’s independence.

The Baroda jewels were famous as much for their splendor as was their beautiful queen, Sita Devi. She was known as the “Indian Wallis Simpson” although her jewels outmatched the Duchess of Windsor’s anytime. She was also an avid collector of expensive and rare jewels and had many of the Baroda heirlooms dating back to Mughal times broken to suit her modern taste.
