In 1939, Hannah Senesh left her mother and went to study at the Nahalal Agricultural School in mandate Palestine. It was at this time that she began to write both her journal and her poetry in Hebrew. In 1941 she finished her studies and went to live in Kibbutz S'dot Yam where she would remain for two years. During this time, Hannah began to feel that there was more that she could do and felt that there was a special mission for her life.
This anti-Semitism in her school and the rising anti-Semitism in Hungary was felt deeply by Hannah. She began to speak to Rabbi Imre Benoschofsky, a teacher at her school who was a Zionist, and joined the Maccabea Zionist Organization on October 27, 1938. It was at this time that she formally declared herself to be a Zionist. In her diary she wrote, "I don't remember if I already said that I am a Zionist. I feel now that I am a conscious I am committed to emigration to Ertez Israel." This was a turning point for Hannah and would determine the direction of her future.

Twenty four men and two women were to be sent to different countries. They were to be sent according to their place of birth. Hannah was to go to Hungary and was parachuted along with Yoel Palgi and Peretz Goldstein into Yugoslavia on March 13, 1944. They remained in the forest of Yugoslavia living alongside partisans until they crossed the border into Hungary on May 13, 1944.
Hannah, Yoel, and Peretz crossed the border into Hungary [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], were captured by Hungarian police, and turned over to the Gestapo. Hannah was caught with the radio transmitter and was tortured for the codes. Despite her terrible treatment, she never gave them the information. Her mother was even arrested and brought to the prison. The Gestapo threatened to kill Hannah's mother before her eyes, but she did not give in. While in prison, she lifted the morale of the other prisoners by singing songs of inspiration and by sending signals from her window using paper cut-outs.
On October 28, 1944, Hannah Senesh was tried for treason. Before a verdict could be reached, she was told that she would receive the death penalty. On November 7, 1944, she wrote a last letter to her mother and went with her captors. Hannah was taken to the back of the prison and killed by a firing squad. She did not ask for a pardon and did not want a blindfold. She faced her fate with typical bravery.

Hannah Senesh (Szenes) was born in 1921 in Budapest, Hungary to a secular, Jewish family. Her father was Bela Senesh, a famous Hungarian playwright and her mother, Katarina, taught piano. Her father died when she was six years old [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and her mother continued to raise Hannah and her brother Giora in this cultured atmosphere. She attended a Protestant school which accepted Jews and began to show signs of following in her father's literary footsteps. At age thirteen she received a diary and would write in it until the evening before her mission. Hannah won prizes for her poetry and was even elected into the school's literary society. She was forced to resign from the society however, because Jews were not allowed as officers.
In 1942 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hannah Senesh joined the Palmach, the commando branch of the Haganah and in 1943 she enlisted in the British Army. The British Army was trying to put together a group of men and women who would be parachuted into Europe in order to send back information on German troop movements. The Jews who volunteered saw this as an added opportunity to try to save as many of their fellow Jews as possible. Hannah became the first woman to volunteer as a paratrooper and began intensive training in January, 1944. She had finally found her special life's purpose.
