A brother's or sister's reactions to a disabled sibling are likely to change over time. Some non-disabled brothers and sisters may feel guilt because they themselves do not have the condition. Elementary age kids might feel ashamed of a special needs sibling when they notice the differences in other kids' siblings. Young children might also regress or act out. Others may be concerned over their disabled siblings' future.
It is important to point out that the birth of a child with a disability or the discovery that a child has a disabling condition does cause stress in the family. Parents need to explain to the children why tensions exist and what causes it in a family. Stress might also be brought on by financial concerns due to the child's condition. Because of parents' expectation of brothers and sisters to accept the handicapped child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the normal siblings might show jealousy which they often don't readily voice.
Another interesting finding is that while all sibling relations have positive and negative times, disabled children and siblings often feel more positively than negatively toward their brothers or sisters. This might be attributed to their greater ability to empathize with their sister or brother. Also, very likely due to the disabling condition there is sometimes a greater sense of maturity in disabled and non-disabled sibling groups than in more traditional siblings.
Sibling relations can create a number of feelings. For the most part siblings react with the same emotions toward disabled siblings as they do to non-disabled siblings. Non-handicapped children will react to their disabled sister or bother with feelings varying from love and empathy to guilt and anger. These reactions will depend on many factors such as:
Many parents can agree that having children means occasionally dealing with issues occurring between the siblings. Jealousy sometimes happens in sibling relationships. However, having a handicapped child along with another child might present its own special concerns. The healthier child may at times have difficulty coping with his sibling's need for a large amount of their parents' attention.

Sibling Interactions Between Disabled and Non-Disabled Kids
Often when one sibling is disabled or chronically ill, the relationship is altered. This might be due to the fact that in some cases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the handicapped child doesn't have many chances to interact with other children outside the home, which makes siblings even more important.
The first thing to remember about any sibling relationship is that all children are different. Each child is unique and therefore his or her interaction with different siblings will be individual as well. The roles brothers and sisters play towards one another are very important and special. Siblings are first playmates but often become protectors and friends to one another.
Though nothing will completely ease the stresses of having a disabled child in a family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], being aware of how the other children might react will be Children With Disabilities: Understanding Sibling Issues (accessed July 14, 2010).
