DeLillo sets this up masterfully with some angelic, moralistic characters, but the payoff is weak. Schwimmer, caught post review and priming Nicky's daughter for a romp, is the shadow of the villain he proposes to be. In fact, he's the polar opposite. His disguises are to hide his birthmark, to allow him to be someone else. Nicky Rogan's new play, The Phantom Who Haunts Broadway, is opening tonight. It's a departure for him - a story about who he is. It's important to him, yes, but not as important as his Boston Red Sox chances at taking the Series (remember this is 1986.) To say that New York native Nicky is a diehard Sox fan is selling him short; DeLillo's dialogue about how Nicky feels each and every time the Sox let him down is magical. DeLillo gives us hope for both the game and his story with one simple line of dialogue: "This could be it."
DeLillo does this intentionally, or course. He wants us to see how good Nicky has it, while he shows us how messed up every other aspect of Nicky's life is: in short, his life is falling apart. When he tells his estranged wife that he loves her, somehow we believe this - in spite of him. Nicky doesn't have faith in Nicky, just like he doesn't have faith in his Red Sox.
In the end, Nicky's Sox lose and he decides, having never made it to his opening night, that Schwimmer is set to kill him with his review. So Nicky resolves to go to Schwimmer and kill him first.

Game 6 is set in New York and captures a single day: game six of the 1986 World Series (Boston Red Sox at New York Mets.)
Penned by veteran novelist, Don DeLillo and directed by Michael Hoffman, Game 6 (Official, IMDb) is a story about theater, baseball, and hope. Such a hopeful tale, it attracted such heavyweights as Keaton (Nicky Rogan), Robert Downey, Jr. (Steven Schwimmer), Griffin Dunne (Elliott Litvak), Catherine O'Hara (Lillian Rogan),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Bebe Neuwirth (Joanna Bourne).
Whether Schwimmer's portrayal is DeLillo's or Downey's is unknown, but the character is far too comical to sell as the renowned, hated critic he represents. Schwimmer is a shut-in Buddhist wannabe, who dons disguises and carries a gun when he goes to the theatre - less he be attacked by those he has attacked. He chants and surrounds himself with candles. But we can't help but chuckle when he shows up to Nicky's opening night looking like Andy Worhol in Amadeus. If this weren't enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Schwimmer remains alone in the theatre after the play to write his review - a sore thumb comes to mind.
Where DeLillo gets into trouble is in the tactile Nicky, who plays the part of the would-be success that can't quite reach his divined playwright immortality. But we meet Nicky in his amazing New York City apartment (with a view of the river), and we hear about his other home in Connecticut and picture in the papers. Nicky is relaxed on this day - going about his opening performance and World Series routine while only hinting that he has butterflies. This is not a struggling playwright - this is a successful playwright.
But it's difficult, to say the least, for a novelist to translate his work to the screen (even when he is studio-free and has the full support of the cast and crew.)
