The creation of the Continental Navy (1775 – 1783) was as important as the creation of the Continental Army. In addition to that, the Continental Navy worked exclusively with the Spanish and French navies. The Continental Navy also worked with the Continental Marines which were used for multiple purposes (doing raids and amphibious landings) defending American ship captains [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and killing opposing officers, helmsmen and gun runners aboard opposing ships.
Noted Founding Father John Adams Jr. (1735 – 1825), future United States of America President, lawyer and Province of Massachusetts Bay delegate to the First and Second Continental Congress, was responsible for the creation of American naval regulations. In addition to that, naval hero John Paul Jones (1747 – 1792) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was Scottish in heritage [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was considered the “Father of the American Navy.” He had superior knowledge of naval tactics and helped the Continental Navy last much longer in spite of terrible odds against it.
The United States Secretary of the Navy is a civilian who is the head of the Department of the United States Department of the Navy. The position was first created as a member of the American President’s Cabinet until 1947. That is when the United States Army, Navy, and Air force (also created in 1947) were placed under the United States Department of Defense. The Secretary of the United States Navy was placed under the United States Secretary of Defense.
The Creation of the U.S Naval Secretary
The creation of the United States Department of the Navy was made possible by the Naval Act of 1794. The act commanded construction of four ships armed with forty guns each and two ships which would carry thirty six guns each. It was necessary to have a navy in order to protect American interests at sea.
