Antoninus Pius was born on September 19, 86 AD, as Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Arrius Antoninus, near Lanuvium. Antoninus was the only child of Titus Aurelius Fulvus and Arria Fadilla. When Antoninus was young, his father and his grandfather both died suddenly and Antoninus was sent to live with his maternal grandfather Gnaeus Arrius Antoninus.

The Ascension of Antoninus Pius
Sometime between 110 and 115, Antoninus married Annia Galeria Faustina. Annia is said to have been extremely beautiful and famous for her great wisdom. She spent much of her life caring for the poor and downtrodden in Rome. While married to Antoninus, she gave birth to four children, Marcus Aurelius Fulvus Antoninus, Marcus Galerius Aurelius Antoninus, Aurellia Fadilla and Annia Galeria Faustina the Younger.
The exact time frame of Antoninus’s early career is uncertain, but he seems to have been very successful in the capacity of both Qaestor and Praetor, becoming Consul in 120. Afterward, Antoninus became one of the four Proconsuls appointed by Emperor Hadrian to administer Italy.
Following the death of Emperor Hadrian, Antoninus was declared Emperor of Rome by the Senate. One of Antoninus’s first acts as Emperor was to push for the deification of Emperor Hadrian, which the Senate had initially refused. It is thought that this is where the moniker Antoninus Pius came from. Antoninus was also known to support his aging father-in-law during Senate meetings and spared a number of men that Hadrian had sentenced to death. Antoninus also built temples and theatres and promoted the arts. He was the first Roman Emperor to openly favour Christianity by taking steps to protect the fledgling Catholic Church.
There were a number of military disturbances during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius, including Mauretania, Judaea and Britain, although the unrest in Britain is believed to have led to the construction of the Antonine Wall, which stretched across what is now Scotland. Antoninus was unique among Roman Emperors in that he resolved these crises without leaving Italy once during his reign. Antoninus dealt with matters in the provinces through the provincial governors or the issuing of Imperial letters. As a result, Antoninus was highly praised by ancient writers for his hands-off style of government.
The Early Career of Antoninus Pius
Gnaeus Arrius Antoninus is described in the primary sources as being a man of integrity and culture, as well as being friends with Pliny the Younger. While Antoninus was still young, his mother married a second time, this time to Publius Julius Lupus, in 98 AD. She eventually gave birth to two daughters.
Very few public records
The reign of Antoninus Pius was unique in its absence of military crises. "It is almost certain not only that at no time in his life did he ever see, let alone command, a Roman army, but that throughout the twenty-three years of his reign, he never went within five hundred miles of a Legion." Antoninus’s reign was one of the most peaceful in the history of the Roman Empire.
At the same time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Antoninus was also appointed Proconsul of Asia. Antoninus became a favourite of Emperor Hadrian’s and after the death of his first adopted son on February 25, 138 he adopted Antoninus, on the condition that Antoninus adopt Marcus Annius Verus and Lucius Aelius Verus [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who both would eventually rule as Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
Following the death of his wife, sometime in 141 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Antoninus had her deified and also built a temple in her honour in the Campus Martius, as well as minting coins bearing her image.
