He first came across coasteering in the early 1990s, and became a qualified coasteering instructor in 2004. The term was used as early as the 1970s [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it really became popular as a commercially guided activity in the UK during the 1990s.

No Ropes, but Wetsuits, Helmets, and Adrenalin!
The sea state and tide conditions on the day dictate how easy or difficult the coasteering will be.
“Coasteering involves scrambling across rocks and cliffs, staying as close to the water line as possible,” he explains. “It also involves swims across zawns and jumps in to the sea from various heights.” A zawn is an eroded sea inlet marked by steep cliffs and sidewalls.
“Coasteering is a dangerous activity, more so in rough seas. Never try coasteering on your own. Always go with a company that uses experienced coasteering instructors.” All companies that run coasteering in North Wales have clean safety records, he adds.
“We always wear wetsuits, buoyancy aids and water sports helmets,” Handford adds, “and each instructor has a safety bag that includes a First Aid kit, flares, floating rescue line and VHF radio for emergencies.”
“It’s a very fluid environment that constantly changes,” he adds. “No two days are the same. On a flat calm day the excitement comes from the jumps we do. In rough seas with big waves the excitement and adrenalin comes from simply being in that environment.”

North Wales is the perfect location to try it out, says Mark Handford, owner-director of Snowdonia Adventures.
In spite of the dangers, Handford says this is one of his favorite activities. “I love taking groups out and teaching them how to survive and be safe in this very powerful environment that demands great respect at all times.
Handford is an experienced coasteering instructor with many years leading groups in coasteering. He holds an aquatic First Aid certificate and has attended rescue swimmer courses. He is also a qualified Summer and Winter Mountain Leader, allowing him to guide year-round in the UK, and holds SPA qualifications to take groups rock climbing. He is a member of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue, qualified in intermediate casualty care, which is a high level emergency medical qualification. (For more information about his company, see Outdoor Mountain Adventures in North Wales.)
In coasteering, no ropes are used, and the intention is to get wet, he says. This distinguishes it from sea level traversing, for example, where the intention is to stay dry [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and use ropes to cross zawns, instead of swimming.
This is one activity where participants should be able to swim, at least at an average level of ability for beginner sessions. Snowdonia Adventures can take participants to venues where the activity will be easier or harder, depending on their skill level. “For harder coasteering, you must be a strong swimmer and very fit.”
