49ers defense - Can they stop [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Alex Smith wore a wrist band for the morning walk-through, so it looks like that might be the answer to the team's play-transmission issue. As I wrote earlier, I think that's the best option. It allows offensive coordinator
Jimmy Raye
to stay in the coaches booth where he's most comfortable, and it cuts way down on the verbiage.
The media, and that includes me, went back to talking and asking about football on Friday, an appropriate response after the continuing drama of coach implosions and reactions to anonymously sourced stories. Particularly with the 49ers hosting the defending Champs on Monday night at Candlestick Park.
Their biggest challenge of course will be halting quarterback [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. If the 49ers have any advantage it's that defensive coordinator Greg Manusky knows [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] well after being with him in San Diego. So well in fact, that Manusky called him "Breezy." Manusky is infamously tight about dispensing information, and he didn't say much about [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and the Saints on Friday. Nevertheless, his teams have proven to be good at limiting good quarterbacks. The 49ers defensed Peyton Manning well last year, sacking him three times and holding the explosive Colts to 18 points. Manusky always had Kurt Warner's number.
The defense flummoxed Warner by dropping several players into coverage, something they might do in this game. Against Manning, they stayed in their standard two-deep look (cornerbacks up, safeties back) until after the ball was snapped and then they shifted into a different coverage.
Cornerback Shawntae Spencer said the only thing they can do against [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is stay mistake free. "We've got to limit the mistakes on our end, and force them to beat us," Spencer said.
With that said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'd be surprised if the 49ers blitz much.
Speaking of Spencer, he provided some needed levity when he inadvertently crashed into linebacker Ahmad Brooks during a strip drill. Brooks, who's recovering from a lacerated kidney, popped up and grabbed Spencer's facemask. "That was on me," Spencer said. "I was trying to get in there and knock the ball out. He's a tall guy and I got under his shoulder pads a little bit."
He said he and Brooks talked about it later. Here's a clip of the mini-confrontation.
