Directed by Wayne Wang, whom also directed The Joy Luck Club, and based on a story by Yiyun Li, The Princess of Nebraska shows us the dramatic differences in culture when separated from it. The story begins with a young Chinese girl named Sasha, afraid to face the reality of being pregnant and having an abortion, heads out to San Francisco from Nebraska to perhaps make up her mind and get a taste of reality.
Opting out of responsibility for a careless mistake is something that most humans can relate to. The only difference that is made in this movie, is what would be the best choice for both parties. Since having a child means putting yourself second for the rest of your life.
We follow Sasha into the life of Chinese women in America. She quickly finds a friend while in Chinatown and embarks on a journey of perversion and high rolling business men. She is tempted in selling her unborn baby to the black market and is left wondering exactly what to do. She begins to fall in love with the girl who gave shows her. Yang is almost invisible in the film [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since he appears to want nothing to do in the trouble he’s caused.
Hidden Agenda
But as morning comes and the actuality of her situation is getting closer, she is faced with a decision that gets harder and harder to make. By the end, the audience is left wondering exactly what her choice is, since we never know precisely where her heart ends up.

The Missing Chinese Millions

There are two truths intertwined in this movie. Both abortion and prostitution are put on the plate and are dissected in a very straightforward angle. Because of the nature of both subjects it’s easy to believe that both are options instead of mature choices. Nebraska for instance, ruled out abortion as an option, leaving girls like Sasha [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a world of increasingly hard choices.
Two Worlds
Upon arrival to the busy streets of San Francisco, forgotten to be picked up from the airport by her friend, Sasha heads out alone and meets up with a man named Boshen. Boshen, as we later find out, is Yang’s gay lover, Yang being the father of Sasha’s unborn baby. She is torn between having an abortion, or keeping the baby in order to sell it [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seeing as the cost for a female baby increased since the one child policy in China has backfired. Leaving men in China overpopulated with no women to marry.
