The Ethical Debate on Brain Life and Abortion
Death used to be defined as the end of “bodily functions” which included heart beat and respiration. As technology improved and medical advances led to resuscitations after traditionally defined “death,” it became necessary to define death differently. Death is now defined as “brain death.” Brain death is the end of all (whole) brain activity; the point when brain activity will not return or the condition is irreversible. Brain dead people can have their bodily functions kept working by the use of life support equipment. This is extremely useful to support the organs for transplantation. This is the legally and clinically accepted definition of death.

The Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice Debate
How is Brain Death Defined?
Partial Birth Abortion Ban Passed in Arkansas
If life ends with the end of brain function, then maybe life begins with the beginning of brain function. Some authors put brain-life as early as 25 days after conception (Jones [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “The problematic symmetry between brain birth and brain death.” J Med Ethics. 1998 August: 24(4): 237-242.)
The abortion debate may not be settled scientifically and clinically as long as the metaphysical definition of life remains an undefined theory based on faith.
Defining End-of-Life Using Brain Function
There are however many arguments against brain birth. One school of thought states that life birth is metaphysical and cannot be measured, whether in death or in brain-function birth. Proponents of this thought say that at that point and before the point where brain waves are observed, the brain still has the intrinsic ability to develop and cannot be compared to a brain-dead brain. Therefore the 25 or so days cannot be an accurate determinant of when it is safe to terminate a pregnancy, or to consider such termination as a killing. Opponents are however quick to point out that brain function means nothing, the real yardstick [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they say, is the ability of the brain to maintain bodily functions, which can be determined to occur later in the baby's gestation (26 weeks and later). This however may be a moot point with the development of technology which allows babies to survive earlier and earlier outside the womb.
Marginal life issues raise thought-provoking questions; marginal as in “before” and “after” life. When does life begin: at conception, at the first sign of brain activity or at the moment when the baby is able to exist outside the womb? When does terminating a pregnancy constitute a killing? What about the end of life; does it end with brain death [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if so does removing life support constitute a killing?
