When Michael Jackson died unexpectedly in June 2009, many extraordinary things happened. We all saw the hysterical outpouring of grief from his army of devoted fans, which was only to be expected. But far more remarkable was the enthusiasm with which other artists who were previously unwilling to be associated with MJ stepped forward to offer their tributes and respect.
It was seen just as much in the massive slew of DJ tribute mixes as anywhere else. Many a hardcore turntablist delved into the archives to put together their own MJ Tribute mix, DJ Premier's being particularly well-circulated throughout the internet.
It's generally assumed that James Brown is the most sampled artist of the hip-hop generation. This Summer reminded us that the accolade really belongs to Michael Jackson. There are obvious plunderings, like the use of the 'Human Nature' beat on Nas's 'It Ain't Hard To Tell' and SWV's 'Right Here', or the 'Liberian Girl' chimes on MC Lyte's 'Keep On Keepin' On'. But the global DJ tribute mixes also threw forward a tirade of more obscure Michael samples, offering brain food for even the most thorough of trainspotters.
But the headlines surrounding Michael in his latter years put many fellow artists outside of their comfort zone. The unspoken theory was that any association with Michael Jackson was a bad career move. While they might have considered it professionally risky to profess it during his less favourable times, however, deep down the respect never went away. Michael's death enabled many to finally express that respect without fear of losing face. It was finally OK to say you liked Michael Jackson again. In fact, it became fashionable to do so.
Michael's influence on current stars like Justin Timberlake, Usher [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chris Brown and Neyo is well-known, in terms of dance moves, vocal style and all-round star presence. The truth is that his influence spread much, much further than this among other artists who have been less willing to admit it.

While most gave more airing to the obvious classics like 'Billie Jean', 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' and 'Thriller', a good number focused instead on Michael's pre-'Off The Wall' days, chopping up early Jackson Five hits [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 70s disco numbers from the Jacksons, and gems from the handful of albums Michael put out on Motown in the early 70s, his working of the Bill Withers song 'Ain't No Sunshine' being a curious favourite.
In the UK, Sway's heartfelt homage, which articulated so many fans' feelings, was all over Youtube complete with a cut-and-paste video within a couple of days, too. Sway stands as a good example of the unlikely MJ fan. Beneath the quirky swagger and cocky wordplay that are his trademark, lurked a respectful admiration for Jackson that might never have become public knowledge had he continued to live. Sway's tribute was clearly genuine, but a cynic might well question the motives of certain other artists who saw the opportunity for a public MJ tribute as a convenient career-booster.
Many fans were able to separate the headlines and the music all along, of course. For them, Michael's music and entertaining skills never lost any of their potency. After all, a great song is a great song forever, whatever its creator does with their life and no matter how many times it's played.
