Un-narrated “Behind the Scenes” footage and interviews with cast and crew as well as the independent’s film TV commercial for Familiar Strangers short theatrical run are the insightful special features found on the DVD release.
While, at the town’s grocery store for sleeping pills and peanut butter for Lilly, he's smitten by the pretty cashier, Allison (Nikki Reed). Allison is equally taken with Brian. The two shyly flirt with one other, until Brian, after several more visits, invites her to the county fair that weekend.
Shawn Hatosy delivers an understated performance as a less than successful son, returning home to his estranged family, in the independent film, Familiar Strangers. Original, low-key music and autumnal-hued cinematography help create the subdued tone of this Thanksgiving holiday-set film, with a message.
Both parents and siblings need to re-define their relationships as they mature, in order to preserve their bond as a family. This insight may serve useful, before having to tangle with our own unique family dynamics this holiday season.

Technical writer and eldest sibling, Brian Worthington (Hatosy) returns home for the first time, after moving three years ago to an unnamed “big city”. The newly published author arrives with his first book in hand as proof of his success, since he rebuffed taking over his dad’s hardware store. However, Brian’s family seems more absorbed in their own problems and personal gripes to more than feebly acknowledge his geeky tome.

His mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], (Ann Dowd), is agitated by her semi-retired husband (Tom Bower) “sticking to her like glue”. Brian’s sister, Erin (Cameron Richardson) is bitter, since her divorce, and too over-protective of her daughter (Georgia Mae Lively). Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his sarcastic younger brother, Kenny (DJ Qualls), an aspiring photojournalist, can’t get his career off the ground. Worst of all, his father, who has not forgiven Brian for leaving, has replaced him emotionally with Lilly, a dog.
It is a Worthington family tradition to team up against another family in a friendly, post-Thanksgiving game of donkey basketball at the annual fair. This quaint sport has its players on donkeys, while playing a game of traditional basketball. Ultimately, the outcome of the game leads to the reconciliation of each family member.
Now, however, Lilly is very old and in poor health. Both his mother and siblings have each pressured Brian to find a humane resolution for Lilly's suffering. It seems that his father is unwilling to acknowledge her agonizing frailties. Reprising his role as the glue that holds the family together, Brian agrees to the task.
