There are of course many more sources of danger in the Great Barrier Reef, but this should not deter you from visiting. A trip to the reef is definitely an unforgettable experience; just make sure you are prepared and armed with in
Dangerous Great Barrier Reef AnimalsBlue Ring Octopus tend to be only about the size of a golf ball, making it easy for them to hide, and are light in color, dotted with bright blue rings. When one feels threatened [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it starts to glow a fluorescent blue; very attractive, but don’t get too close. This creature’s venom is delivered through a sharp beak that can break through a wetsuit. It can cause motor paralysis, which means that you won’t be able to move, even breathe. Cardiac arrest is quite possible, and there is no antidote for the venom. Watch out. These are especially attractive to children, making them even more dangerous.Cone Shells are very common to the reef, and are among the prettiest of shellfish in the area. They have long, narrow shells, with a spiral pattern at one end. There are many varieties of Cone Shells out there, some harmless, some not. If you find a dangerous one, it could shoot you with a dart to protect itself. The dart is toxic [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and can potentially cause death in humans. It is safest to avoid getting too close to any cone shells you might find.Lion Fish tend to hang out in shallow waters [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in small caves and crevices. They are usually patterned like a zebra, and have many long fins, which makes them easy to spot when out in the open. Their barbs are tipped with poison, and a sting may cause nausea, muscle cramps, and fainting, so be careful. Fainting underwater is not a great idea.Stonefish tend to reside in shallow waters, on rocky or muddy surfaces. They are not very pretty, and happen to blend in very well with their usual surroundings, as they look like stones. This means that it is easy to miss one while swimming through the reef or wading in the tropical waters. The Stonefish is considered to be the most dangerous fish in the world. The sting from one of the thirteen toxic barbs on its body can cause paralysis, shock, and even tissue death, if the sting is severe enough. The stonefish is capable of inflicting pain that is said to be unbearable- stay away from this guy.Sting Rays are quite common, and are very cute when on display in a ray tank at the local aquarium. In the wild, they are a bit more dangerous. Their tails have poisoned barbs at the end that they use freely, but typically when stepped on or threatened. The poison is not lethal to humans, but some stings can nonetheless result in death. A strike of a sting ray’s tail can cause deep lacerations in the skin, and can easily become infected.Jellyfish are fairly well known for their stings, but the Box Jellyfish packs a punch like no other. Residing along the coast of Australia, the sting of the Box Jellyfish is often fatal to humans. Vinegar will neutralize the sting, but medical attention is still a must. Usually, there will be areas of the reef or beaches that are netted off to keep the jellies and other potentially harmful sea creatures from approaching unaware swimmers. Stay inside the nets. Better yet, if you see a Box Jellyfish, just don’t go over there.Great White Sharks are common in areas surrounding the reef, but luckily the full-grown sharks cannot reach the areas typically visited by humans. If you plan to venture out past the reef, take precautions appropriate for swimming in shark infested waters.
Every year, thousands of tourists visit the reef for snorkeling and scuba diving. Located off the northeastern coast of the continent, the reef is a perfect site for both activities, as the water is relatively shallow and clear to the ocean floor. But, before you dive in, there are some safety measures to consider if you are a cautious traveler. Despite the obvious beauty of this underwater paradise, there are some dangers that lurk amongst the coral and seaweed.
