The book cover design depicts five owls sitting on tree branches while bats are flying in the evening sky. The simple verse makes it clear that home is where the owls will always want to be. Other musings span the range from T.S. Eliot “East Coker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Zen Buddhist Monk Ryokan and Willie Nelson that are sprinkled throughout A Lifetime Burning.
Quinney begins by chronicling the numerous nooks and crannies filled with a century and a half worth of mementos his family left behind in their southern Wisconsin farmhouse. The attempt at salvaging a much beloved brown canvas coat lined with sheepskin, an attic treasure of a beloved father, fails. Some memories are meant for holding only “in our hearts and minds,” writes Quinney.
The storybook is filled with illustrations taken from the scrapbook, some which were Victorian cards with festive winter scenes and holiday sentiments. Although not released until January 3, 2010, this memoir makes a remembrance gift of a long-ago era appropriate anytime.
The history of the author’s English and Irish decedents is shared through the ancestor’s emigrations and migrations finally settling in Walworth County, Wisconsin. It is the storytelling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as the objects inspired by them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which makes reading A Lifetime Burning enjoyable.

The embossed book cover design for A Lifetime Burning is taken from the cover of the scrapbook given to the author on his first birthday. The scrapbook is the impetus for this book and includes many cards and other memento illustrations throughout.
A Lifetime Burning is a short memoir about holding on to farmhouse mementos. While Richard Quinney, a Wisconsin author, describes the dilemma he is confronted with in clearing out a farmhouse filled with four generations worth of living,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he reminisces about the scrapbook his mother gave him when he was a child.
