The Happening: Mostly Met with Disappointment

As one of the key characters, her performance is quite a drain on the suspense of the already underwhelming plot.

There’s no way around it: Go-Getters is a strange movie. It’s slow, and involves long stretches of trials for its ever-pondering protagonist. It is a movie about real life, and it does a fabulous job in achieving the feel that these very events could be taking place next door to the audience. Deschanel plays Kate, the somber love interest of Mercer (played by Lou Tyler Pucci). She is completely adorable in this role, which includes some whimsicality, and a lot of wide-eyed searching. The character is well-rounded, and Deschanel is able to make her very real and accessible.
Zooey Deschanel is known for her deadpan performances in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Eulogy, and Almost Famous. Her best known role was opposite Will Ferrell in Elf, where she showed off her expertise in cutesy mystique. Her latest role in The Happening shows a different side.
The Go-Getters: A Small-Budget Display of Humanity
Perhaps lost without her humor and suddenly required to show an emotion other than resignation, Deschanel has proved herself to be an actress with limited range.
