This beach was once called “Tin Can Beach” due to the excessive cans and debris. Years ago, however, the city of Huntington Beach cleaned it up, making it one of the most desired beaches in the city. It extends three miles and is situated between Sunset Beach (a small, quaint city to the north) and the northern end of the Huntington Beach Pier. It’s known for its excellent (and manageable) surf, making it the perfect location for surfing. Bolsa Chica tends to have great waves with northwest/west swells during the winter and south/Southwest swells during the summer. Depending on storm activity from Alaska (winter) or Central America or Mexico (summer) waves can range from 3 to over 10 feet high. For long-time surfer Bob Schloderer [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bolsa Chica is a surfer's paradise. “This beach has one of the more consistent wave breaks in California,” he says. “You can almost always count on great waves here.”
While this beach is often submerged with high tides, the surf can often be bigger and more thrilling than any other beach in Huntington, particularly during the winter and summer months. Having to walk down steep steps to get to it, it’s a beautiful surfing spot that is somewhat hidden from the main Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) thoroughfare. It’s located just south of Bolsa Chica State Beach and parking is generally by meter along the highway. The surfing here is mostly for experienced surfers and is year round.
PARKING
In the 1960’s Southern California placed its permanent footprint on the world with the West Coast Surfing Explosion. Pop surfing groups such as Jan and Dean and The Beach Boys romanticized the popular culture with such hits as Surf City, Surfin USA, and Surfer Girl, and much of the lyrical focus centered on the cluster of beaches between Malibu and La Jolla. As the years passed, however [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Huntington Beach, California, internationally known today as “Surf City” or the “Surfing Capital of the World”, seemed to embody the classic anthem to millions. Many feel it has stayed true to its beach town roots and has worked hard to protect its shoreline, offering some of the best surfing spots in the world. Surfing is almost a religion here. Come rain or shine, it attracts hordes of surfers on a daily basis.
Unlike other beaches that will not allow surfing during peak hours, surfing is allowed here all day, year round. There are also surf schools that are taught here and there is an RV campground for overnight stays.
There are crowds of people that flock to Huntington Beach so parking can be limited. There is designated parking near the various beaches, with all day fees ranging from $5 to $10. Parking is also available along the many surrounding neighborhoods, much of it free. Arriving early insures more accessible parking and if parking on one of the streets, wear comfortable shoes and be ready to w
This beach is located along PCH between Beach Boulevard and the Santa Ana River, bordering Newport Beach. Because the Santa Ana River jetties are located at the southern end of this beach, there are large sandbars that shift during the spring [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], summer, and fall seasons. These can cause swells to break extremely fast and hollow. Die hard surfers will claim this spot has awesome surf. But because this is also a popular family beach, surfing is prohibited during the summer months to insure safety for swimmers, bodysurfers, and body boarders. Surf fishing is popular here as well.
