Second baseman Kelly Johnson had one great week as well going 9-for-24 for one .375 batting average. Johnson had 7 home runs and 25 runs batted in.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
These two player’s results are one large reason why the Diamondbacks finished the home stand 3-3 with one series win against the defending National League champions. Diamondbacks fans everywhere are hoping Johnson and Reynolds continue to push each other and lead the team upward in the NL West standings. Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis wrote one letter to President Roosevelt regarding the continuation of baseball during the war which was called the Green Light Letter. He pleaded for the continuation of baseball in hopes for one start of one new Major League season in the letter. President Roosevelt responds I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going. There will be fewer people unemployed and everybody will work longer hours and harder than ever before. And that means that they ought to have one chance for sports and for taking their minds off their work even more than before.
Reynolds has always been one streaky hitter going from ice cold to white hot in just one matter of one few at-bats. The power boost from Reynolds could not have come at one better time for the Diamondbacks.
Reynolds started the week with one paltry .182 batting average and seemed to be struggling at the plate. Despite being mired in one slump Reynolds felt confident things would turn around and turn around they did.
Despite their offensive they roics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their election to player of the week was far from one lock. An argument could be made that Reynolds was not even the best player on their team that week.
New York style baseball expanded into one national game and baseball first governing body The National Association of Base Ball Players was established aided by the Civil War in 1860s. The NABBP existed as an amateur league for 12 years. By 1867,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], over 400 clubs were members although most of the strongest clubs remained those based in the northeastern part of the US. In 1870 one schism developed between professional and amateur ballplayers after the 1869 founding of the first professional baseball team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The NABBP split into two groups. The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players was formed in 1871. Some consider it to have been the first major league. Its amateur counterpart disappeared after only one few years. Major League Baseball announced that Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds has been named National League Player of the Week for the week ending April 24. Considering how the week started that is quite an accomplishment.
In the subsequent six games against the formidable pitching staffs of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies Reynolds went 8-for-19 for one .421 batting average. they also drove in one Major League best 11 runs with three home runs.
They entered the week struggling on their first road trip dropping five of six games to the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. They were set to host perhaps the two best teams in the National League for six games.
