The Player, released in 1992, is based on a novel by Michael Tolkin (no relation to Tolkien, the famous author of the Lord of the Rings), who also wrote the screenplay for the movie. The premise of the story is that a Hollywood studio executive, Griffin Mill (played by Tim Robbins) is being blackmailed (supposedly by a writer whose script he rejected). He then goes about trying to stop the blackmailer and in all the hijinx that ensues, the audience is pleasantly (or unpleasantly, depending) surprised to find out that the movie has a happy ending. Despite, of course, a man being murdered by Mill, Mill getting away with the crime, and the blackmailer himself never actually getting thrown in jail. Happy endings are one of the main points of the movie, after all. As Mill puts it, a good movie needs “Suspense, laughter, violence. Hope [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], heart, nudity, sex. Happy endings. Mainly happy endings.”

What Just Happened DVD Review
Even if the everyday viewer is not a Hollywood connoisseur, though [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are other moments that might leave them laughing. Whoopi Goldberg [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for instance, swinging a tampon by it’s string while interviewing the main protagonist, Griffin Mill about the events that lead up to a screenwriter’s untimely demise. And anyone can get a laugh out of Bruce Willis and Julia Roberts – after their names were dropped multiple times – appearing in the final movie being reviewed in The Player.
Ultimately, however, the overall movie was not as good as it was hyped up to be. The protagonist was not especially likable. And while the acting on all fronts was commendable, The Player does not live up to the hype.
The Plot
Looking past the plot and its one or two unsatisfactory elements, the insider references are noticeable to those who know exactly what goes on in Hollywood. Cher’s appearance at a dinner party in a bright provocative red dress to a specifically labeled “black and white attire only” invitation is funny, but viewers may not get the reference to Canadian actor Norma Shearer who arrived at a Hollywood Black and White ball in a red dress. However, it might not be so hard to catch the character of Walter (played by Fred Ward) asking Joel Levison (played by Brion James) if he had ever seen the movie The joke is that Brion James was in the remake of the 1950 movie.
Even for the uninitiated viewer, there are a lot of interesting things going on in Robert Altman’s movie The Player. First, at the time of filming, Julia Roberts and Bruce Willis were in their prime and their names are suggested at every single movie pitch in the film. Secondly, there are more cameos in the film than fleas on a dog (sixty, to be precise). And thirdly, most of the jokes are probably over the viewer’s head unless they are up to date with Hollywood insider trivia.
