Bogart - How a Dedicated Actor Became Bogie
American Actress Anjelica Huston
There Will Be Blood & Sierra Madre
An Analysis of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
In a directing career that consisted of nearly fifty films spanning five decades, John Huston often chose stories centered on desperate men searching for wealth. Among these movies were The Maltese Falcon, The Asphalt Jungle, Beat the Devil, The Kremlin Letter, The Man Who Would Be King, and, one of his finest movies, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
The movie was based on a novel of the same name written in 1927 by the enigmatic and reclusive B. Traven (1890?-1969?), whose real name was probably Berwick Traven Torsvan. Although possibly of German or American birth, Traven spent much of his life in Mexico where he wrote novels and stories that often revolved around social injustice, cruelty, and greed.
Humphrey Bogart gives one of his strongest performances as Fred C. Dobbs, a man who initially only wants a break in life. Slowly, the audience becomes witness to Dobb’s slow descent into viciousness and paranoia as he wrongly suspects that his partners want to steal his riches. Yet, at the same time, Bogart is still able to create empathy for his character and the viewer can even be saddened when “Dobbsy” is brutally killed by bandits.
The Cast and Synopsis of the Movie
Cast: Humphrey Bogart (Fred C. Dobbs), Walter Huston (Howard), Tim Holt (Curtin), Alfonso Bedoya (Gold Hat), Bruce Bennett (Cody), Barton MacLane (McCormick), John Huston (White Suit), Robert Blake (Mexican Boy)Director: John HustonRuntime: 126 minutesStudio: Warner Brothers
Walter Huston, the father of John, is memorable as Howard. The actor does not allow his character to become one dimensional. Boisterous [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], crude, and not beyond taunting and ridiculing his partners, Howard is often the trio's sole voice of reason and wisdom. “I know what gold does to men’s souls,” he prophetically tells Dobbs and Curtin early in their adventure.
The movie is set in the Mexico of the mid 1920s. Two American drifters (Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt), barely existing day by day in Tampico, join up with an old prospector named Howard (Walter Huston) to search for gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains. They soon find themselves not only fighting the elements, an outsider (Bruce Bennett), and Mexican banditos, but each other as distrust grows almost daily.
Credit should also be given to one of the supporting actors. Alfonso Bedoya is outstanding as the grinning [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but murderous, bandito, Gold Hat. It is he who is also given one of the most well known (
It was these themes that Huston would also emphasize in his faithful adaptation of Traven’s most memorable work.
The Source of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Tim Holt, known mainly for B-Westerns, gives a steady performance as the basically moral Curtin, convincingly showing the inner conflicts that his character frequently undergoes. He constantly fights his own avarice as when he almost succumbs to Dobb’s suggestion that they steal Howard’s share and desert him. On another occasion, he seriously considers killing Cody, a man who comes across the men's camp [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rather than make him an unwanted partner.
Treasure….. is one of the finest character studies ever brought to the screen. As a story of a man destroyed by avarice, it is only matched by the silent classic Greed and 1987’s Wall Street. Its story is thoroughly believable, due in large part to the multi-layered performances of its lead actors.
